1. Your bank is probably the first place you'll try. Banks have in recent times become highly competitive and in order to retain your business, may offer better rates. For example my bank has upgraded my checking account to a premium account and for that I pay $20 per month.

As a result I get several privileges including free, worldwide, comprehensive travel insurance. But here is the best part ... I get all this free travel insurance not just for myself but also for any member of my family traveling with me including my parents and siblings.

I said free because I am already getting other benefits which are worth a lot more than $20 per month if I were to buy them individually. I also save a lot of time as I never have to look around for insurance. So don't ignore your bank.

2. Credit card companies also offer similar insurances, with some added advantages. In case of theft or loss of your credit card, they will supply you with an emergency one, often within a few hours.

In addition to travel insurance offers, there is another advantage in checking your credit card company's terms. If you book your travel using your credit card, pretty much all card companies give excellent cover against many of the things that can go wrong.

Some credit card companies also have specialist travel departments which not only give you travel discounts but also give you even better protection, i.e. better travel insurance and at a much lower cost. But note that all insurance offers exclude you making a claims, for the same item, to multiple sources even if you do have multiple insurance cover.

For example, let's say you have bought travel insurance separately and you have bought your travel ticket using your credit card. If your luggage is lost, you can almost certainly make a claim to either of the two sources but not to both at the same time.

The reason is that the insurance companies have suffered massive fraud in recent years. Allowing multiple claims simply encourages fraudsters to have multiple insurances and make multiple false claims.

For example, they can take an already damaged suitcase on a long journey knowing that it will fall apart. They can then claim damage and loss of property from multiple insurers.

3. Insurance companies are a popular and obvious source for annual travel insurance. If you drive a car or have home insurance get a quote from your insurance company. Remember, because you are already a customer, your car insurance often entitles you to a very good discount.

Here's a tip: if they don't give you a competitive insurance, tell them that you will be looking else where for a good package. Let them know you will be looking for a package that includes great home insurance, excellent travel insurance and also good car insurance.

Listen, fear of loss WILL make them bend over backwards for you and if they don't? Here's another tip: When you talk to any other source to get your competitive travel insurance, make sure you mention your other assets that you could be insuring with them, such as your car, home, home contents, etc.

This won't work with travel companies but works absolutely beautifully with most insurance companies. I have done it many times and saved myself thousands of dollars, yes thousands, over the last few years.

The insurance industry is massively competitive. For once, this works in favor of the "little guy" (you and me), so let's use it.

4. Certain types of home insurance may also give annual travel cover. Do look into pretty much any insurance cover you have. Some home insurance policies include some forms of travel cover including loss or damage to your property while away from home.

Tip: even if you live with your parents, ask them to check their policy for you. You will be amazed to see that even "your" property is covered while away from home.

Just one word of caution: do not assume what is covered or the level cover. If you are not sure just ask the insurer. If the cover they describe seems even better than what you expected based on the policy document, then do ask them to put their clarification in writing.

Why? When any major loss occurs, the insurer will send a local expert to assess the damage. These guys are called loss adjustors. Their job is to save money for the insurance company. And I tell you from bitter personal experience, they take no prisoners.

They will screw you down to the ground, if you don't get things in clear black and white writing. Just do it. It takes minutes to request clarification in writing but can save you thousands of dollars when you have one of these mean loss adjustors arguing with you over the policy.

5. You can also buy last minute travel insurance from travel agents and airlines at the airport. Expect to be taken advantage of, heavily! Needless to say, this is one of your most expensive options. Just avoid ending up with this option, see to your insurance long before you need to travel.

Now here's the thing. Travel insurance policies are not all identical. As well as considering price, you absolutely must read the terms and conditions carefully. For example, the upper age limit of some insurance companies may vary.

Some companies may limit the number of annual trips, whilst others may have no limit at all. Look, most travel insurance policies cover a range of events and claims. But as they say, the devil is in the detail.

The problem you will definitely face with some really cheap policies from unknown and possibly disreputable companies is what they put in the fine print. You know what I'm talking about? ... all those tiny little statements they put on the back of the form? Or if you are buying insurance online (and you should), notice all those pages of really small text they ask you to agree to?

Well, that's where they bury lots of little conditions and limitations. Most people don't read all the terms. Do yourself a huge favor and on this occasion, do read it all. If the insurance policy terms are full of "weasel words" or complex language, just move on and do not buy.

All insurance companies are quick to point out how many millions you can claim in "total", in case of a serious accident. But they all limit the amount per item within your claim. So claims for loss of cash will be capped and so will claims for electronic devices, clothes, etc.

This means that with the cheaper policies you will have a really low limit. For example, if you claim for a mobile phone and an MP3 player, you may find that the limit on personal electronics is not enough to even pay for "one" of those devices, let alone both. Don't wait for an unfortunate event to show you the flaws in a dirt cheap policy. That is the worst time to find out and it is a time when you need the most help.

With the credit crunch hitting us even harder just as we unpack our suitcases, people are going through extreme measures to accumulate a little extra cash. Travel insurance scams have seen an 80% increase recently as the credit crunch develops with holiday makers claiming on items which have not even been stolen or claiming for more than the items actually worth.

With the number of claims increasing it has forced the insurance companies to act, they now look out for tell tale signs from a claimant and can determine a fraudulent claim much easier now than a genuine claim. They are however, reluctant to release these signs.

If you have a claim rejected, it will be marked on your credit rating and will remain there for three to six years.

This has also forced the insurance companies to bump up their premiums resulting in the honest genuine people paying more whilst the frauds claim the extra cash. You can still save money on travel insurance by shopping around and comparing quotes.

Taking Prescription Drugs Abroad? Read Our Tips

It would be a bitter pill to swallow if you went on holiday to a foreign country and had all your luggage and medicine lost. Would you know what to do? If your wellbeing or your life depends on taking regular doses of your medicine then you can't afford to take any chances when travelling.

It can be baffling trying to organize taking your prescription medicines abroad with you. One important tip is to always carry the medicines in your hand luggage with your travel documents, money, and other important items (it's not a good idea to take out the doses you'll need during the flight and pack the rest in your luggage!) Keep all the medicines in your hand luggage for the duration of the journey in case your checked luggage is lost or misdirected. The medicine should always be kept in its original bottle or package, with the label affixed showing your name, prescribing doctor, and dosage information.

A little preparation before you leave will lessen the need for panic if the worst should happen - and also avoid you missing a dose. Most medicines should be available at pharmacies abroad, but be aware that they may be known by a different name. (The same applies for many over-the-counter medicines, such as allergy pills and pain killers). Before you leave, ask your chemist to provide written instructions about your medicine, the dose, and the name it is called in the country you plan to visit. Visit your GP well in advance of your trip to talk about any necessary vaccinations for your trip - especially if you have a medical condition which might complicate things - as the courses can take weeks or months to complete.

Another tip is to get the go-ahead from your doctor before you book your trip, and make sure that you will be able to obtain travel insurance to cover your pre-existing conditions. There are upper age restrictions on many travel insurance policies, and all pre-existing medical conditions must be declared. If a travel insurance company agrees to cover the risk associated with your condition there may be an additional fee to pay. Some insurers will not accept any pre-existing conditions at all, so the process of finding a suitable policy could take some time and you may need to shop around.

Your GP is permitted to prescribe up to a maximum of three months supply of most medicines for your travels. If you have an extended trip planned check to make sure that your doctor is willing to do this before you book. For all prescription medications you will need to obtain a letter from your doctor to take with you, especially for items such as diabetes equipment - syringes, etc. With the tight security at airports these days, you are likely to encounter problems if you try to get through without back-up documentation to vouch for your medicines and medical equipment.

If you take controlled drugs (such as methadone) check the rules for taking them into foreign countries as there may be restrictions. A letter from your doctor must be obtained, and if you plan to be gone for more than three months you will also need to obtain a personal license to carry the drugs. If in doubt about any medicine or medical equipment, check with your doctor, travel agent or airline or get in touch with the embassy of the country you plan to visit. The Department of Health is a great resource, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website also contains a lot of useful tips about travel (especially the 'Know Before You Go' section).

Although it's a good idea to apply for your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you should never rely solely on it, but always purchase a private travel insurance policy as well. Some countries do have reciprocal healthcare agreements with the UK, but many do not. In most cases you will be required to pay for prescribed medicines and apply for reimbursement when your return home. Your private insurance may pick up any of the non-reimbursable payments you have to make out of pocket. It is important to remember that the EHIC and your private travel insurance policy will only cover treatment which becomes necessary during your trip abroad due to illness or an accident. It will not cover you if you travel abroad for the specific purpose of receiving medical treatment.

As a last tip, it's a good idea to print out detailed information of what is and is not covered medically in the countries you plan to visit and take it with you. Always check for up-to-date advice and information before you leave. If you have access to the internet, type in EHIC, or check the Department of Health website for more information. A spoonful of sugar won't help the medicine go down or improve your mood if it gets lost abroad and you have no idea how to replace it!

Why Do I Need Travel Insurance? Personal Experiences

For many people the thought of paying out for insurance is unnecessary. This situation will never happen to me is very common. Certain types of insurance are compulsory regardless - car insurance, business insurance etc, but many people just think it is a "waste of money" to buy insurance for their freezer, TV, health, legal costs on rental property or vacation, this will never happen to me. Sure you can be lucky and dine out a few times on what you could have paid out, but what happens when a disaster strikes?

A few years ago my family was going to take a late summer holiday with my late father in law who lived in Dublin, Ireland going to join him in the Algarve in Portugal. We had booked this through a package company and naturally they encouraged you to purchase Travel Insurance. 24 hours before the trip we received a call from Ireland to say that he had been taken into hospital. The holiday had to be immediately cancelled and the warm weather clothing unpacked and appropriate clothing for Ireland packed instead. The Travel Insurance at least covered the cost of the lost Portuguese holiday and we were able to take this with him in the early summer the following year.

Some time later we were off on a summer holiday to Ireland, this was in the early era of low cost budget airlines in the UK and we set off for London Luton airport in what we thought would be plenty of time. Normally there would have been plenty of time as this is a journey we had done on numerous occasions. On this particular Sunday Luton was holding its Half marathon and trying to get anywhere need the airport from the Dunstable side was near impossible. We just sat in traffic and eventually arrived at the airport..too late! The flight had gone and the next one that day was fully booked. We were able to book on a flight for the next morning (naturally at an additional charge) and had to go back home again for 24 hours. Fortunately, although we lost a day's holiday, we were only staying with relatives and did not lose out too much. No we had not taken out Travel Insurance.

In 2001 we decided to spend Christmas in the sunny South of France. When it was not raining it was sunny and very pleasant. We set off to return home via Nice airport and discovered all the flights to the south of England were cancelled. It was covered in a blanket of snow. We spent the entire day at the airport waiting for news. The flights going into London Heathrow were eventually going out as they had cleared the runway, but our flight for London Luton was not even at the airport, as it had never left its destination that morning. Luton never opened that day and we could not even get booked on a flight for the following day as we had gone low cost and the earliest flight was the day after.

We had to hire a car again and stay on for two more nights. We eventually arrived back to a London Luton (and that was still touch and go as only the runway and approach roads did not have snow on them) and got safely home. This time we had Travel insurance - an annual policy and this kicked in and covered some of our additional costs.

It is most important that you do have travel insurance - you never know when you might need it, particularly if you are making your own booking arrangements. Most travel companies insist that you take out a policy, however if you are booking a weekend away, or going self catering booking the accommodation and travel yourself, you might forget or just think it is a waste of money. On a recent visit to Amsterdam, The Netherlands the holiday we booked into on line stated (and as I also saw with some other Dutch hotels) that a "non refundable" deposit would have to be made at the time of booking. If for example the booking had been made three months in advance and you change your travel plans - well there goes the deposit you paid!

Travel insurance is probably one of the most confusing types of insurance around. Numerous clauses, sub-clauses and a myriad of little stipulations make for a very complicated policy, which nevertheless is very important for any holiday-maker.

People going on holiday tend to adopt an 'it won't happen to me' attitude and, hopefully, it won't. But nobody is immune to ill-health or robbery, and baggage loss can happen to the best of us. So, for sheer peace of mind, it's worth looking into travel insurance when booking your trip.

The medical aspect of a travel insurance policy is probably the most important and the most needed. Far more people fall ill abroad than you'd think, and the cost of OTC medication can be extortionate abroad as well as at home. Even contracting a simple stomach bug can cost you dearly. And if you need to be hospitalised in a foreign country, you could find yourself deeply out of pocket - most countries don't have an equivalent to the NHS.

It's important to remember that most travel insurance policies won't cover you for any problems related to pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer, especially if you haven't mentioned these to your insurer when taking out the policy. Like any other type of insurance, omitting details on application can result in claims being refused, so make sure you tell them everything. This also goes for any dependents who are travelling with you; their medical history needs to be disclosed, but if the holiday is cut short because of a pre-existing condition it's unlikely you'll be reimbursed. Pregnancy, although technically a pre-existing condition, will normally be covered as long as you will be less than 28 weeks pregnant by the end of your trip (24 weeks for a multiple pregnancy). This restriction can vary between insurers, so always check your policy.

If you lose your possessions on holiday, your insurer will normally only pay out if you had taken reasonable care of them; if you had left them unattended you will be seen as negligent and claims will normally be refused. Likewise, if you leave any valuables unattended in your hotel room, vehicle or mobile home, and they are stolen, you may not be able to claim. If possible, keep your valuables in a room or hotel safe, or keep them on your person.

If your holiday has to be cancelled, there are some situations you will not be covered for. If you cancel simply because you decide not to go, for example because of a relationship break-up, you won't be refunded. If your holiday is cancelled by the hotel, or if you have an accident or unforeseen emergency at home, most insurers will refund the costs you have paid so far, plus any cancellation fees due. Again, check your policy first to see what is and isn't covered.

When you look for a travel insurance policy, don't just go on price alone. Annual travel insurance may work out cheaper, but if you only go away once a year for two weeks, you'd only really need cover for that time. Also, read all the small print, and ask questions, to make sure the policy covers exactly what you need.
